Meet the "Crane Puppy Pack": six Labradors needing sponsors

We are the “Crane Puppy Pack” Six yellow pure breed Labradors, three girls and three boys

We have just had our first birthday which is nothing unusual after 12 months apart from one sad fact that we had been taken to the vet to be PTS as we were not showing signs of being able to walk at 8 weeks old.

The vet thought we had Neospora caninum and so contacted the Labrador Rescue Trust to see if we could help. We took them on and agreed to support them for the rest of their lives. They were treated for Neospora and we hoped they would gain the ability to walk.

It was subsequently found that they had not been tested for Neospora and had been misdiagnosed as when our own vet tested them they came back negative for that condition. We therefore sought further professional guidance and have had two of the pack visit the Royal Veterinary College in London to see one of the top Neurologists in the country.

The conclusion is that all six pups have a condition called cerebella malformation. This is a non-progressive neurological condition where the part of the brain responsible for motor control and balance, is underdeveloped at birth. Symptoms include uncoordinated movements, tremors, a wide-legged stance, and swaying, commonly known as "wobbly cat syndrome" in felines. It is often caused by in-utero infections, such as feline panleukopenia, and while incurable, affected pets often live happy, comfortable lives with specialised care.

These puppies are still all together being fostered and undergoing various forms of treatment which include Hydrotherapy weekly, Physiotherapy, acupuncture, laser treatment and lots of cuddles.

They are not able to walk unaided but either in a quad cart or three-point harness are able to plod/charge around the garden and anywhere we are taken. We are now looking for foster home for four of the pack as two have already found their forever home.

We need your help to sponsor these pups as they are a lifetime commitment to the Trust and incur a fair degree of cost for their upkeep. The Trust already supports many dogs with pre-existing conditions and has to raise funds itself as it is not in receipt of any external grants.

A bit about each Pup:

Blue the biggest but possibly most gentle of the pack “a big gently giant. Loves his over-sized tennis ball, cuddles, driving in the back seat of the car and being outside in his cart or harness”.

Bertie is the second biggest boy and probably the stockiest. Loves being talked too and quivers his whole body. Very good at standing almost independently and is very calm in the pool swimming almost on his own. A bit of a girl’s boy as always chasing them.

Quinn the last of the boys his nick name is Mr. Pipe and slippers or Mr. Pat Pat as this is the nose he makes when moving around the floor. Not the strongest on his hind legs but is trying hard to catch the girls. Quinn has his favourite Auntie who he won’t let go of once he has her cuddling him.

Daisy is the best kisser and just loves to cuddle less mad in the quad cart than some but like them all loves company and being close to you and her family.

Pinkie the smallest of the pack AKA the flee as she can jump several times the length of her own body which we try not to encourage in case she hurts herself. One of the best at standing a true mad girl on both land, water and wheels.

Clementine like Pinkie can often be found on the sofa as they can get up on their own and again loves a cuddle and being in the cart and in the pool. All are true Labradors when it comes to food but Clem will actively push to the front just in case it runs out (which it never does) but she does not know that.

We at the trust along with all the helpers have worked tirelessly to give these little angels the best chance in life knowing that they are pain free and have a good quality of life even though not being able to walk unaided.
